Selectboard Resignation

HeatherAt the April 14 Board of Selectman’s meeting it was announced that Heather Fowler has submitted her resignation due to work conflicts. A special election was therefore scheduled by the board for June 14 to replace her position on the Selectboard. Her remaining term is until March, 2017, so the new Selectman will only serve for 8+ months.

By April 20 there were two hopefuls who had taken out nomination papers. One is Nathan Mason, former Selectman who was defeated for re-election on March 9, 2016. Wanda

Wanda Whitener

Another is newcomer Wanda Whitener, a musician who has lived at 127 Buttermilk Road for over 30 years with her husband Bill. Wanda has recently retired as music teacher at Tremont Middle School. Wanda plays French horn, and both are members of Bangor Symphony Orchestra and teach private lessons at their home. Wanda has stated that she values conservation and education. She and Bill were instrumental in starting SFOA, Summer Festival of Arts, 37 years ago. She served as its director for the first 3 years. She was music coordinator for MDI Schools for eight years. When the Tremont Middle School built their new addition, she was on the Planning and Building Committee for two years. She has also served on the Principal’s Advisory Committee at Tremont.

Time will tell if others will join the race. The deadline for submitting papers with signatures is May 12.
